When people were still afraid to fill up

It was the mid-1980s when unleaded gasoline was introduced in Europe. And it wasn't long before people were buying cars that relied on it. And the catalytic converter in modern, emission-cleaned cars could not tolerate leaded gasoline at all. This was not a problem in this country, but it was when traveling abroad.
Rumors spread that certain petrol stations were adulterating because leaded petrol was perhaps even cheaper to buy than modern unleaded. And so it was not impossible to obtain leaded gasoline from the unleaded filling station. It was also rumored that the tank containers, which were now filled with unleaded petrol, were not completely emptied and cleaned before the fuel type was changed.
In addition, a replacement catalytic converter was very expensive in the early days, so some drivers were afraid to fill up. It's been a long time ...
