False colors (at the Techno Classica 2022)
03/24/2022
When you think of certain car models, a typical color scheme usually comes to mind. In the case of the Alfa Romeo CSS Touring Coupé, these are probably often silver or gray shades, but few people imagine this car to be yellow (as in the picture). This does not necessarily mean that this car was actually available to buy at the time or that the coupé exhibited at the Techno Classica was delivered in this color. It's just about our own imagination.
When we got a taste for it on the opening day of Techno Classica, we immediately photographed other examples, e.g. the Mercedes-Benz 630 from 1928 with Saoutchik bodywork. For this car, one would probably have expected black or white, perhaps even a pastel shade as the base color, but hardly violet. However, we know that Saoutchik was always good for a surprise.
Let's move on to the Ferrari 365 GTC. This model was also often ordered in metallic silver, and shades of blue were also popular. But yellow? Rather unusual.
And the open goddess, the elegant Citroën DS as a convertible. Red would hardly come to mind here, although it actually suits the car well.
For the Aston Martin DB5, especially as a convertible, (James Bond) gray metallic would probably have been the first choice again.
And we would probably rather imagine a Dino 206 GT in red or yellow than in white, although the small mid-engined Ferrari is known for having been painted in many unusual colors.
P.S. Of course, we'll be bringing you a "full-blown" report on the Techno Classica, which has just opened with over 2000 cars on display. There are a few more with unorthodox colors ...
