When Subaru reached for the stars
12/12/2020
If you look at the Subaru trademark, you will see six stars on it. Late in 1989, however, Subaru almost reached for the stars, as the prototype of the SVX was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. A six-cylinder boxer engine with 24 valves, four camshafts and fuel injection, combined with all-wheel drive and a body design by Giugiaro.
And, as if that wasn't enough, there was also the Caspita, powered by a twelve-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters and 60 valves, which Motori Moderni had developed for the Japanese. Around 450 hp was quoted as the power output, certainly enough for the mid-engined sports car, which impressed with its breathtaking shape.
But while the (Jiotto) Caspita, which actually had relatively little to do with Subaru, never became a production model, Subaru produced the SVX in series from 1991.
We had the pleasure of driving one of these SVXs today, and the report will appear in our sister magazine SwissClassics Revue in the new year.
And you can read an article by Roger Gloor about the Jiotto Capsita in our magazine archive .
