Summary
Almost three million Ford Mustangs were built between 1963 and 1973 - the success of this US sports car could hardly be better characterized. The concept of building a pretty sports car for the whole family, albeit a small one, was a complete success, despite rustic technology, but not least thanks to low prices and massive performance. This report looks at the history of the US classic Mustang and shows a vehicle from 1965 in detail, supplemented by brochures, press reports, technical specifications (27 pages) and lots of contemporary images.

The Ford Mustang, which was introduced in 1964, is actually a representative of the compact class, even though the typical American automobile had monumental dimensions in the year of its birth. Compared to the first Ford Mustang prototype, which the Ford makers had designed with a V4 mid-engine, the production Mustang was a whole lot bigger and blessed with enough space to transport a small modern family and their luggage. This was exactly what Lee Iacocca wanted when he outlined the specifications.
