50 years of the Ford Mustang at the 33rd European Mustang Convention at Butzweilerhof/Cologne
06/16/2014
The Ford Mustang Club of Germany 1964-1973 invited and over 1000 Pony Cars came to the European Mustang Convention, which was held from June 6 to 8, 2014 at the old Butzweilerhof Airport in Cologne.
Slight traffic jams already occurred on Saturday, when almost 650 Mustangs had to be processed at the entrance in one and a half hours. Participants from neighboring Mustang clubs from Switzerland, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, but also visitors from Denmark and Sweden found their way to Cologne. The longest journey was made by a Mustang from Hungary. In beautiful sunshine, the participants and visitors were able to marvel at the vehicles presented on the former airport grounds and there was plenty to talk about restoration, technical improvements or simply to greet old friends again.
The First Mustang Club, which now has 650 members, has grown enormously in recent years under the leadership of club president Ralf Wurm, who has been in office for 25 years, and with the help of his family. The crowning achievement of his career will certainly have been this meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Mustang, but we hope for many more successful years of the FMCOG.
A Mustang was raffled off at the 50th anniversary celebration, which was won by Ute Duffy from Düsseldorf. Ford Germany presented two new Mustang models of the 2015 Mustang, which will be launched next year, in an evening show on Saturday. A red coupé and a gray-metallic-sprayed convertible were presented to the interested public in an elaborately staged show. The brief for the design was interesting - the designers were initially given only three things as guidelines: 1. Steve McQueen for the coolness factor, 2. a big cat to give the vehicle a dynamic "leap forward" and 3. a fist for the "breaking loose" appearance.
The all-round successful Mustang meeting in Cologne proved that the Mustang cult is alive and well and that the fan community is still growing steadily.
