The Citroën SM and its tow hooks

Special cars should also be photographed in beautiful surroundings, thought an editor of a well-known automobile magazine 43 years ago and drove the Citroën SM entrusted to him onto the sandy beach in Deauville early in the morning.
Alone when the pictures were taken, the beautiful French car got stuck in the sand and dug itself in deeper and deeper.
Thank goodness help arrived in the form of motorized road workers. Without further ado, they took the Citroën by the hook and tried to pull it out of the sand. But instead of the sporty coupé moving, the tow hook flew around the friendly Frenchmen's ears, along with the tow rope.
Fortunately, the Citroën SM had two of these hooks! It worked on the second attempt and only the missing hook on the test car afterwards bore witness to the mishap.
So if an SM appears somewhere with a missing tow hook, then it is probably the test car from 1971.
