Would you like a little more?

At the beginning of the nineties, the BMW 850i was the most expensive way to drive a car from Munich. In 1993, for example, it was listed at DM 149,300.
Anyone who thought that they were getting a fully equipped car for this significant amount of money was mistaken in view of the extra options.
Seat heating, electric seat adjustment incl. memory function or automatically dimming interior mirror were just as much an extra charge as leather seats, which cost DM 3,210 in the cheapest case, but DM 23,960 for a complete leather interior, i.e. more than a well-equipped VW Golf GTI at the time.
However, the fact that 101 German marks were also charged for six compartments for stowing compact cassettes (at least with an indication of whether full or empty - picture above) is surprising, especially as the radio with 6-disc CD player and hi-fi loudspeaker system already cost almost 4,000 marks extra.
And 15 years later? There is a whole range of these generously equipped luxury tourers on sale for a four-figure sum each, i.e. for only slightly more than the original cost of the car phone, stereo system and a few other small extras. A lot of car for the money. Our driving report will follow shortly ...
