The Sauter-Porsche Bergspyder in the hotel corridor
Sometimes you really do come across forgotten rarities by chance, for example in an underground hotel passageway in the Salzkammergut. In fact, there is a Sauter Porsche in the Jagdhof in Fuschl, which Kurt Sauter once built for Heini Walter.
Obviously, the current owners do not know the full history of the car, but it is said to have been equipped with a Porsche type 547 engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters (engine number P 90 022). This is said to have been the prototype of a factory racing engine.
The car was used for the first time on May 6, 1956 at the slalom in Dübendorf, followed by further race starts, including on the Avus in the same year. In 1957, Heini Walter had an accident with the one-off car and the car was badly damaged.
The car was later rebuilt with a plastic body, although it is said that the shape no longer quite matched the original design. However, it is definitely a feast for the eyes and it is of course a shame that this particular vehicle does not take part in the Gaisberg race, which takes place almost on the hotel's doorstep. So it just stands together with a Mercedes Benz 170 and a BMW 3/20 PS in the underground ...
