Yes, those were the days when people still relied on personal responsibility in traffic and used campaigns to exhort people not to accelerate too much. It's important to remember that the average driver in 1961, when these posters were put up almost 60 years ago, probably only had 40, 30 or even less horsepower under the hood.
Incidentally, the "Zügle Deine Pferde" campaign was not well received everywhere at the time because it was considered to have too little direct an impact on road users. For the winter season, the posters were therefore supplemented with two green stripes with the words "Rain Snow" and "Danger of Skidding". A few crews were sent around Switzerland to stick these stripes on the billboards. It is not known whether this made the campaign more effective, but it certainly made it more concrete.
