The VW Golf II is hardly noticeable in traffic. It was presented and launched in 1983 and the last examples were built in 1991. Next year at the latest, they will all be classic cars, i.e. 30 years old. And yet there are probably quite a few observers who do not consider the VW Golf II to be a "real" classic car.
Other cars from the same era have it much easier. A Ferrari 308 GTS QV is no more likely to be denied classic status than a Jaguar XJ-S or a Porsche 911 SC.
The fact that this is the case probably has to do primarily with the numbers built and still in existence today. Generally speaking, however, cars that were very popular when they were active have a much harder time finding a loyal following as they get older. Exceptions prove the rule ...
