The small difference
12/02/2020
Of course, the difference between a Ferrari 340 America Vignale Coupéfrom 1952 and a Jaguar E-Type Lightweight from 1963 is pretty big. There are 6 cylinders and 11 years between the two racing cars, which were also allowed to be driven on the road.
However, the two cars pictured have one not insignificant thing in common: they were both built more or less from scratch in the factory. The slight difference is that parts of the chassis (but not the body, engine or interior) were obviously still present on the Ferrari, while the Jaguar was manufactured as a so-called continuation version with a chassis number that was omitted at the time. Both are therefore practically new cars, but the Ferrari, with its chassis number 0202A, naturally has a notable racing history with a Le Mans appearance in 1952, while the Jaguar logically comes without any previous history.
Nevertheless, a collector paid USD 1.5 million for the newly built Jaguar in 2014 and a few weeks ago the coupé was auctioned by RM/Sotheby's for USD 1.71 million(incl. surcharge/commission). However, the Ferrari 340 America, which is on the market via Mecum, is likely to fetch a significantly higher sum of money. We will (perhaps) know more in January 2021.
