Can a car name be reinterpreted?
12/12/2019
Of course you can, but should you?
Fordhas just unveiled the Mustang E, a crossover/SUV with electric drive. The only thing the car has in common with the original Mustang is the pony on the radiator, which of course is not a radiator.
So it's not a "real" Mustang with a V8, but perhaps the generation that bought the Mustang from 1965 onwards will now be happy to get into an SUV-like car that can cruise silently through the countryside.
The Mustang is not the only Ford model with a new direction. After all, the recently launched Puma SUV was also once a sports coupé.
And Ford is not alone : Maserati, for example, now calls its smaller saloon the Ghibli, whereas this type designation once adorned Giugiaro's beautiful coupé.
So far, it does not seem to have harmed the sales figures of the "new one". Whether it has done it any good is probably difficult to prove. As a traditionalist, however, one would be happy if the car manufacturers were a little more creative and gave new cars new names ...
