"Blues Brothers" with bull car and bull engine in the open air
The drive-in movie, a long-forgotten leisure activity from the USA, has been revived. TCS Training & Events is showing movie highlights in the open air for the second time with the TCS "Drive-in Movies" over various weekends.
The first drive-in movie theater was opened in the USA in 1933. Richard Hollingshead Jr., owner of a car care products company founded by his father, opened the world's first drive-in movie theater on June 6, 1933, just outside his hometown of Camden, New Jersey.
The movie shown was "Wife Aware", an insignificant film in film history. Hollingshead did not yet use a screen as a projection surface, but a large, whitewashed stone wall. The sound system used three large loudspeakers so that the sound could be heard several kilometers away.
The Camden Drive In Theatre offered space for 335 vehicles, but was closed again after just three years. However, the drive-in theater experienced its absolute heyday in the 50s and 60s.
It then fell into oblivion for a long time and only experienced a rebirth in recent years. Films can still be seen at the TCS training and event site in Betzholz near Hinwil on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until August 28.
Last Saturday, the absolute cult film "Blues Brothers" by John Landis also attracted many historic cars to Betzholz. Under a starry sky, police cars were once again scrapped by the dozen (in the movie, of course). The legendary John Belushi drove through the streets of America with his colleague Dan Aykroyd in a cop car, with the cop engine and the cops breathing down his neck and blues in his ears.
Today's projection screen technology enables sensational picture quality even in daylight, and this is far surpassed in the dark. Noise is also no longer an issue these days, as the movie sound can be received via the car radio, resulting in hardly any noise emissions. Incidentally, there are of course devices for hire for historic cars without their own radio.
