Summary
A new era began with the Mercedes-Benz 350 SL. The successor to the Pagoda had been developed with the American market in mind as a safety sports car and was significantly heavier with an eight-cylinder engine and larger dimensions. But that wasn't the only reason why people were skeptical at first; critics also didn't like its looks. Almost 50 years have passed since then and the R107 is one of the most popular classics of all time. This report goes back to the beginnings and portrays a 350 SL from 1971, tells the history of the model series and shows the vehicles in current and historical pictures, supplemented by sales literature and sound samples.

Preview (beginning of the article)
When Mercedes-Benz announced the 350 SL touring sports car on April 17, 1971, not even the builders themselves would have believed that it would take 18 years for a successor to appear on the scene. After all, the model cycle at Daimler usually lasted six to eight years and the predecessors 190 SL (1955-1963) and 230-280 SL (1963-1971) had also kept to this. It was also unlikely at the time that the R107 would become a long runner because it initially received a rather sober press response. The new SL had been announced with great hope in order to counter the typical prejudices that Mercedes drivers had to contend with. Instead of being "stock conservative", "totally unsportsmanlike", "boundlessly comfortable", "extremely risk-averse", "excessively selfish" and "incredibly materialistic", SL buyers were to be able to demonstrate "sportiness with a conscience" in future.
