Now one might have assumed that more than 50 years ago, with only a fraction of today's traffic, the roads would have been much quieter?
However, people were obviously already suffering from the consequences of noise pollution from traffic back then, so much so that poster campaigns were initiated to persuade drivers to produce a little less noise. The options were already available at the time and included shifting up a gear or refraining from unnecessary acceleration maneuvers.
