Is the future driving behind the past? The Ferrari F40was the super sports car of the 1980s, while the BMW i8is one of the most convincing attempts ever to combine ecology, economy and sportiness. Technically, the two vehicles have little in common, but they accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly the same time, i.e. around 4.5 seconds. After all, they both have a plastic body.
The Lancia Stratos HF, which we see behind the Bugatti 35 , also had this. In the 1920s, the Bugatti was perhaps what the F40 was in the 1980s. Except that it was also extremely successful in racing and, of course, was also one of the fastest on the road. The Lancia Stratos was actually incomparable. Created from a concept car and developed to become a permanent winner on the world's rally tracks, which it did for several years.
F40, Stratos, Bugatti, they are all unforgettable sports cars and decades later still provide car designers with inspiration when they think about new things. Will the BMW i8 one day be able to join this exclusive circle? One thing is certain, the four cars have something in common that many alternatives unfortunately lack, namely a focus on driving pleasure and an uncompromising attitude when it comes to conveying the joy of driving ...
