It was in the spring of 1962 when GoodYear, the American tire manufacturer, presented an illuminated car tire. Made from Neothane, a transparent material derived from crude oil, the tire allowed light sources to be mounted on the inside.
This invention - demonstrated here on a Ford Taunus - would certainly have been practical and would have created new possibilities for designers, but the illuminated tire apparently did not catch on, even though the lady in the picture immediately used it to fix her make-up, a problem that was famously solved with the illuminated make-up mirror in the interior ...
