It has been around 50 years since this photo was taken. It shows a traffic police officer directing traffic at a busy junction. Instead of stopping the vehicles with hand signals, she has access to a control panel that controls the traffic lights.
She has a telephone (with a dial) for emergencies. And a rear-view mirror for a better overview.
Let's bet that this type of traffic management was much more humane and ultimately more efficient for motorists and pedestrians than some of the things we see today.
Incidentally, the photo was taken in Zurich and shows Bellevue-Platz, with one of 30 police officers, originally from the canton of Graubünden, sitting at the checkpoint.
