Classic pearls of the future - Mazda Xedos 6
06/01/2016
The Mazda Xedos 6 was already an exotic model when it was still being built. From 1992 to 1999, just 72,101 units left the production plant, a figure that may seem large, but was a disappointment for Mazda and led to the discontinuation of the model series.
Technically, the approximately 4.5-meter-long Xedos 6 largely corresponded to other models in the Mazda family and was similar to the 626 (sold as the Capella in other markets). With four-cylinder and V6 engines, the Xedos 6 used drive units that were already available.
The special feature of the Xedos 6 was its design, which was a clear departure from the otherwise sober Mazda style. With its flowing lines, it could easily have been mistaken for a baby Jaguar. The design of the model series, which was always built as a notchback saloon, was so progressive that even today the car is still not perceived as outdated and it would hardly occur to anyone that the oldest models will achieve classic car status in just over five years' time.
The interior design was somewhat less sophisticated, but the cars were equipped to a high standard.
The Xedos 6 models remained relatively rare in this country, but can still be found in normal traffic today, which is certainly also thanks to the robust Mazda mechanics.
