The automobile and the record player
06/02/2016
Are there any similarities? Between old cars and the good old-fashioned record player? Of course there are, after all they are from roughly the same era. And they are both technically obsolete today, because in the age of MP3 and streaming, a record player running at 33 revolutions and scanning analogue via a sound cell is just as unnecessary as a car with an unsynchronized gearbox, undamped in-line eight-cylinder engine and cable brakes.
But obviously both have their appeal. For some, recorded music is only really brought back to life with the analog record player, for others only the early automobile can make the technology really tangible.
There are collectors on both sides and both the old car and the analog record player are currently enjoying an upward trend. However, audiophiles are usually satisfied with a single (often newly produced) record player, which can be really expensive, while classic car enthusiasts like to have several (really old) vehicles in their garage.
Be that as it may, it's nice that they still exist, the smoothly spinning record players with their black vinyl records and the old cars with their characteristic shapes and noises ...
