Prices of classic cars do not rise democratically
06/07/2016
Two years ago, as part of our "Question of the Week", we asked our readers which of four potentially undervalued vehicles would probably increase in price the most.
The choice was the BMW 3200 CS (Bertone) Coupé, built in the early 1960s.
The Maserati Indy 4700 represented the Italian, which tends to be undervalued.
The Citroën SM stood for French sportiness with the potential to increase in value.
And the Porsche 924 Carrera GT, which was only produced around 400 times between 1980 and 1981, represented German sports cars and a little bit of the modern era.
Readers voted for their favorite and saw the BMW 3200 CS and the Maserati Indy 4700 ex-aequo as having the best chances of increasing in value, followed by the Porsche. The Citroën SM was chosen by the smallest percentage.
We have now evaluated the results, exactly two years later. We took the Classic Data listings and took a weighted average of the various condition ratings from June 2014 and June 2016. And were surprised by the result ourselves!
It was the Maserati Indy and the Porsche 924 Carrera GT that made the biggest (and quite impressive) leaps in value.
| Vehicle | June 2014 | June 2016 | Increase in value |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 3200 CS | 44990 | 55600 | 24 % |
| Maserati Indy 4700 | 43440 | 92600 | 113 % |
| Porsche 924 Carrera GT | 30490 | 61460 | 102 % |
| Citroën SM Injection | 30440 | 39280 | 29 % |
By the way, you can see which of the four candidates you yourself gave the highest chances of increasing in value. Perhaps you were right ...
