Summary
For many, the name Jeep is synonymous with all-terrain vehicles. And indeed, the Americans were ahead of the game when it came to the development of 4x4 use in passenger cars. And the Americans can justifiably be called the inventors of the SUV, as the Wagoneer model combined the advantages of off-road capability with those of a road-going station wagon as early as 1962. This model history shows the development of the modern SUV from its origins to the present day, illustrated with over 90 historical images.

For many, the name Jeep is synonymous with all-terrain vehicles. And indeed, the Americans were ahead of the game when it came to developing 4x4 use for passenger cars. The history of Jeep began in July 1940, when the American army informed the car manufacturers of its desire for a light reconnaissance vehicle. 135 car companies were informed, and three eventually built a prototype that could meet the requirements for a lightweight, all-terrain vehicle with three seats and a fold-down windshield: American Bantam (BRC), Ford (GP Pygmies) and Willys (Quad). After extensive field tests with 1500 vehicles each, the Willys Quad won the race and became the Willys MA/MB, but everyone soon called it Jeep, although in retrospect it is not even clear why. Perhaps because the army term GP (General Purpose) can also be pronounced as Jeep, perhaps because there is a well-known extra in the Popeye comic strip called "Eugene the Jeep".
