Time-conscious and classically beautiful - Opel Rekord in 1962
04/10/2012
Well, these might not be the adjectives that you would retroactively apply to the 1962 Opel Rekord today. But they were chosen by the Opel marketing people when it came to designing the sales brochure for the Rekord sedan.
In addition to drawings of the car, they chose architectural illustrations to underline the statements, once a historic domed building, once the most modern architecture that was in vogue in the early sixties.
"The new form of the new era - bright and clear," they continued, and also showed the car at the center of a film set. And for the interior view, they positioned a twin-lens reflex (Rolleiflex?) on the back seat.
And it was emphasized that the Rekord could be used for business commitments ...
... as well as for family and leisure.
The Opel advertising people used only drawn illustrations and no photos, whether this was done for nostalgic reasons or because of the additional creative freedom is an interesting question.
It should not go unmentioned that the Rekord was richly equipped (even with exterior locks on BOTH front doors) and that it weighed only 930 kilograms despite its expansive dimensions of 4.5 meters long and 1.63 meters wide for the time. That is only slightly heavier than what a 2012 Smart Fortwo weighs.
We have of course filed the brochure in the Zwischengas archive! And we also recently published a comparison test of the Opel Rekord Coupé from 1961/1962 against the Ford 17 M TS .
