Historic racing cars compete for the VIRAT Trophy at the 2012 Gurnigel mountain race
Racing cars from the 1930s to the early 1960s can only rarely be admired in racing action today, especially in Switzerland, where there are hardly any opportunities to drive historic sports and formula cars in the proper manner. It is therefore all the more gratifying when the single and two-seater racing cars are once again given the opportunity to race against time on the mountain, as was the case at this year's Gurnigel hill climb.
On the occasion of the 43rd Gurnigel Hill Climb on September 8 and 9, 2012, the Vintage Race Tracks Association (VIRAT) will be holding an exclusive race in accordance with Appendix K of the FIA International Sporting Code and the provisions of the ASS National Sporting Regulations. A maximum of twenty open single and two-seater racing cars from the following periods are permitted:
- Period D (1.1.1931 - 31.12.1946)
- Period E (1.1.1947 - 31.12.1961 / for single-seater and two-seater racing cars until 31.12.1960)
The "Verein Bergrennen Gurnigel" is the organizer of the Gurnigel hill climb race, which means that participants in this exclusive race benefit from the professional overall organization, exemplary track safety and extensive media work. VIRAT is a partner of the "Verein Bergrennen Gurnigel", looks after the participants in categories D and E and revives the history and tradition of mountain races on the Gurnigel in words and pictures. The winner of these two historic categories will receive the VIRAT Trophy.
