Clear the way, curtain up for the search for the perfect everyday sports compact of the seventies. In addition to the all-conquering Golf GTI, there were other contenders for the title of "hottest hatchback", although these are now almost forgotten. BMW even tried its hand at the compact sports car before VW, with the touring model of the 02 series. In this case, touring did not mean a station wagon, as is usual at BMW today, but described a fast two-door car with a large, practical tailgate. Nobody wanted it back then, which makes this current clash between the outsider and the class leader all the more interesting. Who will win more sympathy? In our comparison, this is of course not decided by the largest trunk or the top speed, but by criteria that can hardly be measured. Will the BMW, despite its lower profile, come close to the cult classic from Wolfsburg? How does the rear-wheel drive fare against the front-wheel drive and how do the prices of the two compacts compare? An exciting duel in every respect, which could lead to completely new considerations for some brand fans.
