Tinkering with classic cars yourself is still popular, but less so (question of the month)
11/04/2024
Ten years ago, we asked our readers whether they still work on their old cars themselves. In the early days of the classic car hobby, there were hardly any specialized companies that took care of the maintenance of old cars, but this has changed considerably in modern times. At the same time, however, cars have become more complex and the expertise required for interventions has increased, which is why more and more classic car owners are having their cars maintained and renewed by increasingly specialized workshops.
In 2014, 58% stated that they generally worked on their car themselves, while 28% left major work to a specialist and 13% generally went to professional service providers and specialists for maintenance/servicing.
In 2024, this has shifted a little, as the answers to our new " Question of the Month" showed: Do you work on your classic/young car yourself?
45.7% stated that they always do the same work on their old car, while 32.3% said that they carry out minor work themselves but have major work done by a specialist.
Finally, 20.8% use services and specialists for all work.
This means that self-tinkerers fell from 58% to 45.7%, while the group of do-it-yourselfers or non-self-tinkerers now makes up the majority at 51.1%.
What will it look like in another ten years?
