Mercedes-Rhino or Turbot-Benz?

Shortly before the nuclear reactor was declared the drive system of the future, Motor Trend was still speculating about possible turbine cars from various manufacturers at the end of 1957. Among them was a vision for Mercedes-Benz, which stylistically lay somewhere between the 300 SL Roadster and the Turbot Rhino I. The Americans speculated that such a project had been the reason why Daimler-Benz had given up motorsport in 1955.
This was, of course, a mistake. Instead, the budget previously squandered on the race track was needed for the development of the small W 122. Nevertheless, it is a pity that the design never took on a three-dimensional form. Compared to other American studies of the time, it was almost suitable for series production - and the Monsterstern even anticipated today's Stuttgart design language to some extent.
