Is acceptance of electrified classic cars increasing?
In October 2022, the British specialty insurer Footman James conducted a survey among classic car enthusiasts. The survey asked how classic car owners would run their cars if conventional petrol/diesel fuel were no longer available.
76 percent were in favor of using eFuels, while 24 percent preferred converting their car to an electric vehicle.
This result is somewhat surprising, as a quarter of those surveyed could imagine making extensive changes to their classic car, stripping it of its originality (and soul?). Synthetic fuels would be largely unproblematic for use in classic cars. The problem here lies primarily in availability and pricing. For an electric conversion, on the other hand, you have to reckon with considerable five-figure sums today, an investment that will hardly ever pay off with typical use and thus low mileage, and is also not ecological/sustainable if you take into account the high energy and resource input required to manufacture the batteries.
Obviously, however, many classic car owners are worried that in the future they will only be welcome on the road in an electrically powered vehicle. However, there have not yet been any legislative proposals to this effect.
