Generation change?
10/22/2021
The cars you see at classic car shows seem to be getting younger and younger. In fact, the VW Golf GTI pictured here will celebrate its 20th birthday next year, making it a youngtimer. At the Auto e Moto d'Epoca in Padua, it stands (with 108,000 km on the clock) with a price of EUR 6900 next to a VW Beetle that is around 40 years older and is said to cost almost four times as much.
The Golf is well represented among the 5000 or so vehicles on display at Auto e Moto d'Epoca anyway. Of course, cars from the first two editions are mainly on display, but later Golfs can also be seen. The VW Beetle, on the other hand, seems to be on the decline, even if one or two examples are still on sale.
How will prices develop over the next 20 or 30 years? How much will a VW Beetle from 1963 cost in 2041 or 2051, how much will a VW Golf IV cost? And will it be possible to buy a Golf VIII at the Padua show by then, if they still exist?
In 2021, at least the trade fair still seems to be in good health, the halls are pleasantly full and there seems to be no shortage of visitors. At least that was the result of our inspection on the opening day and we will of course be submitting a full report on this year's event shortly.
