Stefan Lüscher - always a racer (obituary)
04/19/2020
Stefan Lüscher (1949-2020) was a racer, whether in the Renault 5, where he won the Swiss Cup in 1981, qualifying for the European Cup in F1, as editor-in-chief of "Auto-Illustrierte" (1993-2010), as author of "Jahrbuch Rennsport Schweiz" (from 1984) or, finally, as a fighter against a disease that can never be beaten. ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a chronically progressive disease of the central and peripheral nervous system. Stefan fought it for several years with all the means at his disposal, day and night. Yesterday morning at three o'clock he had to give up the race.
I received his last "WhatsApp" the day before, at exactly 15:35, with the following lines: "At 99 years old, my mommy has just survived a three-hour emergency hip operation without complications. According to the doctors, this is a world record. We are very proud of her." Stefan, you can be proud of yourself too, because most others would have capitulated much earlier in the duel against this terrible disease.
Still mentally alert, he always enjoyed our meetings, where we chatted about the good old days with the help of the female voice on his iPad.
Stefan's wife Philomène looked after him with great love and sacrifice in both the good times and the very bad.
Stefan, your incredible fighting spirit was simply remarkable. You never lost your sense of humor. I sincerely hope that you have now found redemption.
Our sincere condolences go to his wife Philomène Lüscher.
