Almost a Porsche
04/30/2020
As is well known, the first Porsche was built in 1948, but Ferri Porsche and his colleagues were not the only ones working on sportier versions of the Volkswagen.
For example, an elegant sports car was created in Wuppertal that looked at least as fast as the competition from Gmünd.
The Automobil Revue 8/1949 described this "Volkswagen special convertible" as follows:
"At the recent motor show in Rheydt, Drews (Wuppertal) presented the two-seater convertible shown here on a normal Volkswagen chassis. The lines are clearly based on good Italian models, but the car has a very personal touch. The interior was also modernized and embellished. The overall weight is said to be lower than that of the factory saloon, and a top speed of 120 km/h is specified with a twin carburettor engine. The model was not built in series and was not officially recognized by the Volkswagen factory ."
And this too was a sporty modification of the Volkswagen, of which just a few thousand had rolled off the production line at the time. Not much is known about this example, the Automobil Revue wrote in issue 21/1949:
"An open two-seater sports body for the Volkswagen from Böbel in Ulm."
The photos can of course also be found in high resolution in the Zwischengas photo archive .
