When you could still learn to drive by watching TV
Yes, there was that too. Television programs that conveyed important elements of driving in a more or less humorous way, e.g. driving on the freeway. "Telekurs für Autofahrer" was the name of the multi-part series that was filmed and broadcast around 50 years ago.
You can tell how old these films are not only by the cars they show and the black-and-white look, but also by details that are almost incomprehensible today. Back then, you had to stop at the highway entrance until the traffic had passed and then accelerate from a standstill. Or you had to be able to drive at least 40 km/h to be allowed onto the highway.
