Rover did pioneering work with its gas turbine vehicles. The Jet 1 was the first such prototype that could also be driven on public roads, albeit with compromises. The history of the first Rover gas turbine vehicle is so interesting that it is worth recalling in detail. Until 1948, the turbine idea was a matter for the test bench. In 1949, Gordon Bashford was commissioned to install the extraordinary engine in an automobile. The basic concept of the P4 served as the basis. Bashford packed the turbine behind the front seats. And so the first "mid-engined Rover" was born. More precisely, the engine was located in front of and slightly above the normal rear axle and drove the spiral-toothed bevel gears of the rear axle via a reduction gear and a short cardan shaft.
