From 1976 to 1986, Rover built the SD1 saloon with a 3.5-liter V8 engine and later also smaller drive units. Shortly after its launch, the car was voted Car of the Year, but manufacturing defects soon tarnished the reputation of the modern family and business car. Thanks to quality improvements and continuous model maintenance, the SD1 was nevertheless a success, with around 300,000 units sold. This driving report focuses on the fastest variant, the SD1 3500 Vitesse with fuel injection from the second-to-last year of production. However, the entire history of the SD1 is covered, illustrated with historical and modern pictures of the various models.
