Summary
The Range Rover, the forefather of the modern SUV in Europe, only had two doors when it was launched; it would be hard to imagine the Cayenne or the M-Class having this today. But it took the Swiss Peter Monteverdi to make the luxury off-roader a success in Europe with four doors. One of the early four-door vehicles went to heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi and has survived to this day. This report tells the story of the four-door Range Rover and shows one vehicle each from production at Fissore and at the Solihull plant, supplemented by historical photographs, a rare original sales brochure and audio samples.

Attempts at front-wheel drive began to catch on, especially in smaller cars, but after the demise of the Jensen FF, four-wheel drive was only available in thoroughbred off-road vehicles. Whether Kaiser-Jeep, Land Rover, Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol, these were rustic machines, designed for use in difficult terrain and with mountain shoes or boots on their feet. An exception were the more luxurious Jeep Wagoneer variants, which exuded limousine comfort, at least in the interior, but were hardly sold or bought in this country.
