Almost forgotten - the bumper horns
Beetle drivers remember them, of course, but so do Opel and Ford drivers. They were also fitted to Alfa Romeo and Ferrari (photo), and even designers relied on the protective power of the bumper horns. Apart from their design effect, they were needed because of the non-standardized bumper height of the cars. This meant that two vehicles could get caught up in each other in even minor collisions. The bumper horns, known as "overriders" in America, mitigated this risk and some designers also used them to give the car a more individual "look".
Could we recognize which car they belong to just by the shape of the bumper horns? Probably not. But if you look at them together with other design elements, you can quickly draw conclusions about the vehicle in question.
