Summary
Forty years ago, Porsche presented the Carrera RS 2.7 for the first time in Paris to an astonished but eager-to-buy fan community. Even at Porsche, nobody would have believed that 1,580 of these vehicles would be built, and the sales department even had to be persuaded to sell the car! The road car was joined by a pure racing car, the RSR 2.8, followed a good year later by the two RS/RSR 3.0s with a strong racing design. This report summarizes the development of these two vehicles and compares the different brothers in detail in pictures. The article is supplemented by an original brochure, advertising subjects and lots of historical images.

Happy Birthday Porsche Carrera RS! It will be 40 years old in 2012 and although you can see its age, you don't notice much of it. What the Porsche men around Ernst Fuhrmann put on its wheels still impresses sports drivers and collectors around the world today. And at Porsche, the sales department really had to be persuaded to sell the new RS 2.7 at all! The successful first model, the RS 2.7, was followed a good year and a half later by an even more dynamic brother, the RS 3.0. Although they came from the same family, the differences between the two vehicles were significant. The Porsche advertising department led by Georg Ledert prepared the market for the newcomer with an advertising campaign featuring the bold slogan "Only 500 men will drive it".
