What was there 20 years ago?
There was a lot going on 20 years ago, as you can now read in the newly digitized " auto motor und sport" 2004 issue , which has been integrated into the Zwischengas magazine archive.
Early in 2004, there were already rumors of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz R-Class, ultimately built from 2005 to 2017, although the "spaceship" was still called the "GST" at the beginning of 2004. The car was described as a "fast touring sedan in a large-capacity format".
In April 2004, "auto motor und sport" showed the upcoming "Porsche GT Coupé" with four counter-rotating doors (picture above). The production model was expected in 2008 and, as we know today, it finally arrived in 2009 and the fourth model series was then called the Porsche Panamera and featured conventionally opening doors.
Things became much more concrete in May 2004, when the Porsche 997 was presented , a 996 with a redesigned interior and exterior and more powerful engines. The first test then followed in August 2004. In the same issue there was also a first driving report on the new Chevrolet Corvette C6to enjoy.
Just one issue later, the first details of the new Ford GT, the modern interpretation of the Le Mans legend GT40, were published. This was followed in September 2004 by the presentation of the Ferrari F430.
And finally, in December 2004, the first test report on the 200 hp VW Golf V GTI was published.
Yes, there was a lot to report on in 2004, the entire ams year can of course be found in the Zwischengas magazine archive. And what is striking when looking through it is that cars back then were a little more colorful and, above all, much more often red than they are today ...
