Morgan electric, is that possible?
01/12/2024
Morganis pretty much the most tradition-conscious car company (still) in existence today. Not only do the cars from Malvern still look almost the same as they did 80 years ago, they are also still offered with three and four wheels, as was the case in the 1930s.
However, the sporty Morgans have not completely fallen out of time; the company now relies on bonded aluminum monocoques and modern engines.
Back in 2015, the small car company announced a three-wheeled Morgan with an electric drive, called the EV-3 at the time.
It was shown at motor shows and a certain number of these vehicles are even said to have been sold. But then things went quiet again for the electrically powered Morgan Threehweeler. Until the end of 2023, when it was again presented as the XP-1 prototype and based on the Super 3 built since 2022, developed entirely in-house.
Thanks to aerodynamic fine-tuning, aerodynamic drag is said to have been reduced by 33% compared to the Super 3 and, with a 33 kWh battery, attractive ranges should also be possible. The electric Morgan should not lack forward dynamics anyway.
The only question is whether the second attempt will be more successful than the first. Are the tradition-conscious Morgan drivers really ready for almost silent transportation without the rattling two-cylinder sound, which even the modern Super 3 with the Ford three-cylinder can no longer quite offer?
At the moment, you don't have to ask yourself this question, as the XP-1 prototype is currently still in test mode and will probably be for the next 18 to 24 months. So it is still unclear when it will be available to buy. And by then, electric cars may be even more commonplace than they are today ...
