Do you know the Renault Corvette?
You certainly know him, probably just under a different name. And of course it never looked like the one in our photo montage. However, when the Régie Nationale was first considering a rear-engined model between the 4CV and Frégate in the mid-fifties (at that time still with a 1.5-liter engine), they initially remained faithful to the warships as the namesake. You can read about this in auto motor und sport 5/1955, until it was discovered that Chevrolet had already been using this name for its sports car for two years. So the corvette with a downsized engine became the heir to the throne - in French: Dauphine.
