The ease of steering
09/01/2023
Almost every American crime TV series of the 1970s - from "Kojak" to "Streets of San Francisco" - sooner or later features a Lincoln Continental Mark IV, typically in a coupé version with an opera window and the impressive flaps in front of the headlights.
These cars look very elegant and they glide almost inaudibly over even bad roads. Inside, it hardly feels any less comfortable, as the suspension is compliant. As a driver, you are protected from any strenuous activities, almost everything is moved electrically and the hydraulic power steering responds to small finger movements.
It is easy to imagine that both the good and the bad felt at home on board the Continental Mark IV. The approximately 2.4 tonne car occupied an area of around 5.8 x 2 meters and lacked nothing. Not even an implied hump at the rear for the spare wheel, which was actually located somewhere else in the trunk.
Of course, we will soon be publishing a comprehensive report on this American icon.
