Surprisingly great interest in pre-war classic cars (question of the week)
01/06/2020
Fifty years ago, only cars built before the Second World War, i.e. practically before 1939, were "real" classic cars. And even today, many people still think of a classic car as a car with free-standing fenders and a towering radiator grille.
But the media now report that this is a thing of the past. Interest has shifted away from old cars and towards cars built later. Auction results and prices on the classic car market seem to back this up.
But has interest in pre-war cars really declined that much? Motivated by some letters from readers, we wanted to find out more and posed the " question of the week": "How interested are you in pre-war classic cars? "
Well, let's start from the back. 6.7 percent of over 730 respondents stated that they had little interest in pre-war vehicles and that reporting on them was of no interest.
However, 92.8 percent showed at least some interest in pre-war vehicles! 24.5 percent (absolute) stated that although they were only interested in such old cars to a limited extent, they did read an article about them from time to time.
26.6 percent were interested, but no more than in cars from other eras. Reports on pre-war classic cars would, however, be read with pleasure.
However, 41.7 percent indicated a great interest in pre-war vehicles. Reports on them are very welcome, the more the better.
For the sake of completeness, it should also be mentioned that 0.5 percent did not find themselves in any of the answers given.
In any case, we were surprised by this result and of course immediately verified it using statistical values about reading frequencies on zwischengas.com. And indeed, pre-war car reports are read slightly less often on average than post-war car reports, but the difference is not dramatic. So interest is actually much greater than is generally assumed.
Here are the results in graphic form.
And, of course, we have already posed the next "question of the week " . This time we want to know how classic car owners find a suitable specialist for their old car.
Of course, you can look up the results of previous "Questions of the Week " at any time in the dedicated topic channel.
