Young classic car on the winter tour
10/24/2014
Just in time for the impending onset of winter, we came across this photo. It shows an Austro Daimler Bergmeister built in 1931, today a stately pre-war classic car. However, the picture was taken in 1961, when the car had just barely reached the age of a classic car (at that time it was referred to as a veteran).
The industrialist "Frédéric" drove this car in the Austrian Winter Tour in February 1961, making it an exotic car, of course, as the competition drove contemporary cars such as the Volkswagen Beetle, the Opel Kapitän, the Auto Union 1000 or the Porsche 356. Another exotic car (albeit a much younger model) was also spotted on the 400 km long winter tour, namely a Citroën Sahara with two engines, which won the sports car category (!).
Only 50 of the 85 cars made it to the finish line, and the Austro Daimler was not one of them, as Automobil Revuereported in issue 9/1961
