About exclusivity then and now - using the example of Lamborghini
01/16/2020
Lamborghini has just announced its sales figures. In 2019, 8,205 vehicles were built, 43 percent more than in the previous year. Almost 5000 of these were called Urus, i.e. "Super SUVs" (Lamborghini term).
Even with 8,205 cars, sales are still very low compared to other brands, but compared to the late 1960s or early 1970s, when people were happy if sales figures were in the triple digits, Lamborghini today looks like a large-scale manufacturer.
After all, just 764 examples of the Miura were built in seven years, for example, and even this was a surprisingly large number, as it was not known at the beginning whether they would even get beyond the prototype stage. And things were hardly any better in the Countach and Diablo era. 1983 Countach were built in 16 years, 2881 Diablo in 11 years.
So more than 100 to 200 of these super sports cars left the factory in barely a year, no comparison with the 5000 Urus, the 1104 Aventador or the 2139 Huracán.
It will probably be much more difficult for today's models to increase their current new price tenfold in 30 or more years, as the Miura did.
