Dream cars from Audi, BMW, Ford, Porsche and Volkswagen for young people

43 years ago, the magazine Auto Motor und Sport set the major German car manufacturers an interesting task. They were asked to design a car that would fulfill the dreams of young people, but should not cost more than DM 8000. This amount would be equivalent to just over EUR 4000 today, but even then it was not much money, and you could just about buy a Citroën 2 CV for it. The car manufacturers - Audi, BMW, Ford, Porsche and Volkswagen - went to great lengths and invested a quarter of a million DM. The results were presented in issue 17/1975 of Auto Motor und Sport.
Audistayed closest to reality, taking a Volkswagen Polo as the basis and painting it in a matt color, complemented by a youthfully fresh canvas interior.
BMWdesigned a front-wheel drive three-door model, more than two decades before the Mini was purchased.
Fordcreated the convertible vehicle concept "Sunny", which could be used as a pickup, estate or coupé, depending on requirements.
Porschesurprised with an attractive two-seater mid-engine sports car weighing 650 kg and the technology of the VW Polo.
And Volkswagenimpressed with the "A null null", a compact small car with a total weight of just 570 kg and a new three-cylinder engine under the front hood. At 3.2 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, it would hardly have been bigger than a Smart car
Opel did not participate, but they had just started production of the Opel Kadett City, which was actually also a kind of dream car for young people.
Auto Motor und Sport took the opportunity to ask readers which car would best meet their wishes.
Three months later, the result of the poll was announced. 3973 readers had voted. The winner was the Porsche, followed by the BMW, the Ford, the VW and the near-series Audi. And the readers also submitted other suggestions, such as a BMW that was very reminiscent of the Lotus Super Seven.
None of the cars were built back then, which is a shame, as they would make interesting collectors' cars today. And an interesting question today, what would be the dream cars of today's young people and whether they could be built for, say, EUR 10,000 ...
