Where have the women at the wheel gone?
While researching a report on the Lucerne beauty contest , we found out that in 1929, almost a third of the cars in the parade were driven by women.
However, this was not the case when we strolled past the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este last weekend. Car after car drove past and the man was always at the wheel and the lady, if there was one at all, sat in the passenger seat. And this after decades of emancipation.
Is it because cars have become so expensive for men that they no longer want to let them out of their hands?
Is it because today's modern woman, with her present-day driving skills, is no longer able to master the vehicle technology of the past?
Is it because the cars that are shown at concours these days are particularly resistant to slim calves and thin upper arms?
Even today, women behind the wheel would make for beautiful splashes of color at events. Corrado Lopresto must have realized this, because he entrusted his Osca 1600 GT to two ladies as he drove past the audience and jury.
