The vintage off-road vehicle as a collector's trend?
05/01/2014
The off-road vehicles among the classic cars are still more of an insider tip. Although some Toyota Land Cruisers have already fetched impressive prices at auctions, sometimes reaching six-figure sums, four-wheel-drive vehicles with a rustic look are still relatively rare at auctions. However, this could change in the foreseeable future, as off-road vehicles have understandable advantages as classic cars.
Most early off-road vehicles are built almost like pre-war cars, with a stable and independent chassis on which the body is mounted. The vehicles are robust and not technically complex. Off-road vehicles are often easier to restore than normal passenger cars.
However, they can be a lot of fun to drive and who knows, perhaps there will soon be suitable vintage off-road rallies where the cars can be used by like-minded people.
Depending on the type of car, the cars are also quite rare, especially the earlier types. And Holywood stars or other celebrities also owned off-road vehicles that could have a special appeal for collectors, just like the currently very popular beach cars.
After all, the generation that grew up with modern SUVs is now slowly coming of age as classic car collectors, so it could well be that one or two people are developing an affection for the early off-road all-rounders in particular, could it not?
We have already reported on such vehicles from time to time, e.g. the Volvo Laplander, the Jeep Wagoneer/Cherokeeor the early Range Rover.
