Zwischengas readers think little of electrified classic cars
05/12/2014
In light of the trend towards electric vehicles and the constant emergence of projects in which historic vehicles are "upgraded" with electric motors, we asked our readers what they thought of electrified classic cars. The verdict was clear.
86% of respondents prefer old cars with their original engines, while only 13% have a preference for cars converted to electric drive.
To be fair, it must be said that the minority of supporters is quite respectable, as it is significantly larger than the proportion of electric cars in today's modern vehicle traffic. And there were also quite sensible comments in the comments section.
One reader said: "I have nothing against it: The streetscape would benefit from more classic design. In the USA, major technical conversions are commonplace, whatever fits is fitted - and that is often quite interesting. However, such vehicles should not achieve classic car status, including the associated benefits - and I would only like to see them as "visitors" at events."
However, the majority of respondents and commentators are strictly opposed to the conversion.
A representative of the project in question explicitly commented on the electric conversion of the Heinkel cab: "I don't think the question posed in the survey is ideal with regard to the cab project. We are actively working with young people and are also trying unconventional approaches. Pimping the Heinkel cab has not only introduced many RWE apprentices to the subject of classic cars, but has also encouraged creativity. CAN bus control, touchscreen operation and underbody welding brought the ipad and baby boomer generations together once again. Of course, none of this is taken into account in the question."
We are happy to leave it at that, because the promotion of young talent is indeed an important issue for us too. Further comments can be found on Facebook .
