Herbie's Mustang not sold
05/18/2014
On May 17, 2014, Mecum auctioned the 1966 Shelby Mustang GT 350 once driven by Swiss racing driver Herbert Müller. It was estimated at USD 400,000 to 500,000, a considerable but not outlandish price. However, the bidders did not want to follow the recommendation and the highest bid was USD 310,000.
"The bid goes on", it now says on the Mecum website, meaning that interested parties could contact Mecum and perhaps win the bid at a later date. We have reported on the car.
The Müller-Mustang shared its fate with many others, e.g. a 1963 Pontiac Catalina Swiss Cheese estimated at USD 600,000 to 800,000, whose name incidentally comes from the 120 holes that were drilled in the chassis of 14 Catalinas optimized for quarter-mile races in 1962, a 66 Ford Shelby GT350R Fastbackfrom 1966 (2006 Continuation) or a Chevrolet Corvette LT1 from 1972. Perhaps people were simply not in the mood to buy that evening ...
