Camargue - a much-used name
01/04/2024
In the car world, there are unique and less unique type and additional designations. "Camargue" seems to belong to the second category, even though most people today would probably initially point to a Rolls-Royce model.
This is correct, but the Rolls-Royce Camargue did not appear until 1975.
Two years earlier, Renault had already named a special model of the Renault 12 Break with the additional designation "Camargue". There are hardly any traces of this model left, but we can find out that this version cost CHF 180 more than the normal version at the time, i.e. CHF 11,480. And apparently the differences were small, it was probably primarily a sticker set that could also be bought separately for 292.69 French francs (part number 77 01 391 379). Incidentally, the picture above shows the normal version, not the special model.
Even before the Renault, however, the Citroën GS Camargue was presented by Bertone at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1972. However, as this was a concept car, the name was unlikely to have been protected at the time. And Renault is also unlikely to have bothered with trademark protection for the R12 special model.
